Southern Indiana's Playground
When settlers first arrived, they found themselves surrounded by dense forests and the confluence of 2 streams now known as Brock Creek and Blue River.
William Lindley led a group of men who were sent to select a town site. While discussing possibilities for a town name, Mrs. Lindley suggested Salem, which had been the name of the Lindley's hometown in North Carolina. Salem officially became a town in 1814 - 2 years before Indiana became a state.

By the mid-1840s a railroad was proposed between Salem and the Ohio River. In 1851, the first train arrived which provided a major link to the outside world.
Throughout its history, Salem has thrived on the area's abundance of timber. Several major manufacturers like the Smith Cabinet Company (for years the county's largest employer) and the O.P. Link Handle Company (which had the distinction of being the world's largest producer of wooden tool handles), relied on area timber.

Indiana's invigorating climate has strongly marked seasons. Autumn is favored by many residents as a pleasant time of the year with lower humidity and mostly sunny skies. The Gulf of Mexico is a major player in Indiana's climate with southerly winds from the Gulf region readily transporting warm, moisture laden air into the state.
Average annual precipitation around Salem is 47 inches. May is the wettest month
of the year with average rainfall between 4 and 5 inches across the state. Autumn months are drier with 3 inches of rainfall typical in each month. Average annual snowfall is about 14 inches in southwest Indiana.
Southern Indiana's playground offers some of the finest and most conveniently accessible
locations anywhere in the Midwest. Area attractions include the architecturally
unique Salem Square courthouse; The John Hay Center with its museum, Pioneer
Village and replica of the old Monon Railroad Depot; the Stevens Memorial Museum; the historic West Baden Springs Hotel, once touted as the 8th wonder of the world; and Salem Speedway, whose half-mile, high-banked oval track has provided exciting racing action for fans since 1947.
You'll also want to immerse yourself in Old Settlers' Days, a trip back into time that commemorates the lifestyle and people who were the earliest residents and first builders of Salem. Held in late September every year, thousands of visitors come to Salem to see blacksmiths, quilting, wood-carving and all kinds of crafts plus pony soldiers and their encampments, fiddlers and an assortment of re-enactments.
Area health care needs are served by St. Vincent's with 70
beds. This critical access hospital provides specialized care such as high-tech
medical imaging, including CT scanning, MRI, ultrasound and advanced cardiac
testing equipment. Specialties also include surgical services, cardiovascular
care, obstetrics, outpatient surgery, physical therapy and cardiac rehab.
County-owned Delaney Creek Park is north of Salem, with its 88-acre lake and 187
acres of woods and open spaces. Surrounded on by 3 sides by the Jackson-Washington State Forest, it offers hiking, swimming, gaming, basketball courts, boat rentals, cabin rentals, campsites and more.
You'll find that the Washington County area provides excellent opportunities for
camping, hunting and fishing, biking, cave exploration, bird watching and much
more. The Knobstone Trail, which starts at Deam Lake in adjoining Clark County,
winds its way north through woods and over hills and creeks to Delaney Creek
Park. Clark State Forest is also one of the most unspoiled natural areas in
southeastern Indiana.
Western Hills Golf Course and Country Club provides a regulation 9-hole golf course, clubhouse, pro shop and more. For winter weather fans, Paoli Peaks Ski Resort can show you a good time in the snow.
As you can see, Salem and the Washington County area can provide you with a wide
variety of things to do and sites to see. The next time you're in our area, why
not stop by our United Country office and let us show you some of the many real
estate opportunities we can provide.
